Townshed Act

During 1766 king George lll stated new laws for the colonist. The laws insured special taxes on the colonist for paint, paper, glass, and tea. These items were rare then and the raised the taxes on them. willam pitt was a big part of the act. He opposed the stamp act and believed that colonist entitled to all the rights as an English citizen. Then came Charles Townshed. He was interested in the rights of Americans, but he wanted to strengthen the British army. Charles came up with a new plan for raising money for the colonies. Charle told the king that he would find a duty or something that the colonies need help on. Then the king passed the townshed act. One act placed duties on stuff that the colonist were being taxed on such as, glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea. The townshed act also provided Britains right to trade.  The kind decided to discontinue the taxes on those impotent things but tea was still taxed. So thats when the colonist hit hard.

Why: The money used from this act would be used to pay the British soldiers. The reason for the law of the Townshed act is so that the officials could search anywhere for suspects or smuggled goods. Smuggled goods are goods that people take with out paying tax for them. This act led to the Boston tea act.
