How it Happened
The Revolutionary
war was started because the American colonists didn't agree with
the laws and taxes that the British were putting on them.
They originally tried to settle their disputes peacefully, by
sending the king a document assuring him of their loyalty and
asking him to remove some of the worse laws.
He declared the colonists to be rebels, and
things went on from there.
The Second Continental Congress wrote and signed
the Declaration of Independence. It listed the rights they
believed they should have, as well as the things they didn't like
about Great Britain. Then it had them pledge their lives
to each other and guarunteed the rights they would have.
They fought many battles with Great Britain,
finally ending the war when General Cornwallis was forced to surrender
at Yorktown, Virginia.
Then the Treaty of Paris was worked out and
signed, and peace was restored. Now the colonists could
have their own government, and the freedom they had strived so
hard for.
